CONSIDER WHY YOU NEED A NEW BED
In most cases, new beds are needed because
something has caused you to sleep poorly. Many times it is because
our bodies have changed, usually affected by age, but significant
weight change and other biological issues can make the bed you are
on seem uncomfortable. As we get older, our joints become less
oiled and skin becomes thinner causing our bodies to be more
sensitive to pressure and that is what dramatically changes our
comfort preferences and needs. Pressure relief, is the definition of
comfort, and softer beds do provide more pressure relief.
Tossing and turning are the major cause of poor sleep, and restless
nights. This is usually caused by lack of blood circulation under
the skin causing a reaction of position change. This can disturb
your restful sleep several times during the night causing us to
feel tired the next day. A softer surface can eliminate pressure
and in turn limit tossing and
turning to allow you the benefits of better sleep at
night, so you experience more rested and productive days.
If back
pain is the issue, more than likely your bed has either
lost its integrity due to wear, or an injury to your back (minor or
major) has changed your support needs. Understanding that no bed
can “cure” back pain, but the right support system can relieve pain
and discomfort during sleep, and aid in recovery of injuries.
Support comes from a
variety of construction features, and each design has its own
benefits and advantages. The support system is usually considered
the “core” of a mattress such as a coil unit, or foam core combined
with the top layers. The top layers are considered the comfort
layers, but also work in conjunction with the core to provide
support. Each person is built differently and sleeps in different
positions, so many styles must be offered to provide a bed to suit
all the individual needs. Lie on a bed in
different positions and consider the position of your spine
relative to the position of your spine in proper alignment
(standing upright). From the upright position side
view, the spine is curved, and from the back or front view it
should be straight (vertically). This should be maintained in your
normal sleeping positions. Considering this, realize that your
heavier parts should sink and lighter parts should conform with the
bed.

WHAT SIZE SHOULD I BUY?
A simple answer is as to buy one
as big as you can. It has
been proven that people sleep better when they have more space.
Obviously all sleeping quarters do not accommodate a large king
sized set, but considering the amount of time in bed and the
importance of quality sleep, a few feet of floor space should
easily be sacrificed. Below is a chart of standard mattress
sizes.

*The thickness of beds varies. Manufacturers
have increasingly made mattresses thicker in order to increase
comfort. If there may be an issue of a bed being too tall, take
measurements of your current set and compare to the newer sets
available to judge its appearance as it may look different on your
furniture. Boxsprings are usually available in “low profile” and
are aprox. ½ of the size of a standard one in order to lower the
overall height of the set.

CAN I AFFORD THE BEST BED?
Naturally the more expensive the bed is, the
more luxurious it will seem, but if a budget prohibits buying
certain higher priced beds, you can definitely improve upon a poor
nights sleep without spending the limit. Consider all the aspects
of the above article, and inspect the choices in the price range
that you can afford. America’s Mattress will always provide the
best value and choices in sleep sets of any price range.
*The average person spends 6-8 hours on a bed
(APROXIMATELY 1/3 OF YOUR LIFE), so your mattress is an important
investment that should not have its value underestimated.
